Join a relaxed 1.5-hour food walk through Pontocho, one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric lantern-lit alleys. Starting from the Sanjo end, we’ll stroll the narrow stone-paved street while sampling local bites, learning about the history of this former geisha district, and soaking in the riverside charm of the Kamo River. Perfect for those who want to experience Kyoto’s traditional nightlife and flavors at a comfortable pace. Introduction to Pontocho as one of Kyoto’s five traditional hanamachi (geisha districts). Feel the change from the busy Sanjo area into the narrow, lantern-lined alley. Traditional Machiya Architecture Walk past wooden townhouses with distinctive lattice windows (bengara lattice). Learn about the history of the alley and its connection to the geisha world. Food Stops along the Alley Light Kyoto-style bites (yuba, seasonal vegetables, or small tofu dishes) Grilled specialties (yakitori or charcoal-grilled items) Sweet finish (traditional wagashi or matcha dessert) Kamo River Side Glimpse the riverside restaurants and (in summer) the famous noryo-yuka platforms that extend over the water. Lantern-Lit Evening Atmosphere As the tour progresses south, enjoy the soft glow of red paper lanterns that make Pontocho one of Kyoto’s most photogenic streets after dark.
